Orion dropped the phone.
“Hello? Orion? Are you still there?”
He scrambled to retrieve the phone, muttering an apology while he adjusted himself under his kilt.
Whew. That was a close one. Orion strummed his fingers through the great plume across his helmet on the floor next to him. He remained on duty. Little did Zoe know she was now his responsibility, having switched with Eladius for guardianship with the consent of The Council. Still, Orion needed to remain vigilant and aware of his surroundings in case Zoe needed him. His primary responsibility was to guard her, not ravish, though he longed to bring her pleasure in any way he could. She was incredible and deserved joy. To see her smile was the ultimate reward.
She carried on her discussion while Orion rested against a wall and closed his eyes with a long sigh. Zoe was beautiful, and precious in ways she didn’t understand. Like most humans, she underestimated her worth. He couldn’t pinpoint it, but she was different, rare, and there was something in particular about her that drew him to her unlike any other. If she opened her heart to him, he would take gentle care of it for the rest of her life.
Stripping Eladius of guardianship was hard, for Eladius loved his charge but after hours of negotiation, Eladius finally consented after witnessing what Orion didn’t notice. Orion was taken with Zoe and there was a strong bond forming between Zoe and Orion already, one gaining in strength and incapable of breaking. Eladius foresaw the future for them. He predicted love, kinship, and a permanent, impermeable partnership that would benefit both. They would be stronger together and because of this, Eladius stepped down because not only would he be in Orion’s way if he continued to guard Zoe, but he knew Orion would stop at nothing to be closer to the female who captivated him. All this Eladius relayed to Orion before he left, switching his responsibilities to Orion and gifting him with his charge before he pushed open the double doors and departed. Orion was thankful to his friend for his honesty, bravery, and for the opportunity to protect the beauty who snuck inside somehow, warming the deepest crevices of his beating heart. However, the game was not over yet. Zoe had another guardian who already made his interest known. In order to claim Zoe, he would have to deal with Mercury, but that battle would have to be waged another day for his siren asked him a question.
“Yes, lovely petal, I am available Friday. I will take you out wherever you like.”
“What did you just call me?”
“Lovely petal, is that okay?”
“You flatter me.”
“You’re beautiful.”
“That’s really sweet.”
“I’m being honest.”
An odd, awkward silence followed.
“Zoe? Soraya? Are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m here. I’m just not used to someone complimenting me.”
“You deserve every praise.”
Zoe sniffled. “Thank you.”
“Now, where were we? Ah, yes, we were arranging for our second date.”
“Second?” Zoe asked.
“Yes, I consider drinks with you our first.”
Zoe laughed. “Okay. So, where can we go?”
“Where would you like to?”
“Well….”
